Castello di S. Nicola
de Thoroplano

The Castle of St. Nicholas de Thoro Plano is situated on the hill bearing the same name, and from this position it overlooks the entire city of Maiori, offering a splendid view. If you are on foot, the steps of Via Castello lead from the burgh of S. Pietro to the Castle, or, if you are traveling by car, you can reach the Castle from the village of Vecite.
The Castle of St. Nicholas
The castle was built in the ninth century to defend the city from pillaging after the barbaric incursion of the Longobards of Sicardo. After a period of abandonment, the castle was rebuilt in the fifteenth century.

Today, the castle walls, with its fortifications and buttresses, and its nine semicircular towers placed a varying distances, are still almost completely intact. In the area inside the walls - a space that can hold about one hundred people - what remains of the storerooms and cisterns, as well as the ruins of small church dedicated to S. Nicholas, are conserved. In its present state, the building still conserves its original seven sided polygonal perimeter of approximately 550 meters. Here, in this place steeped in history, the local population found safe shelter from enemy attacks.

Guided tours of the castle are possible from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
