Rossellini in Maiori

"E majurese so' amante d'e furastiere (The people of Maiori love visitors!) This ancient popular saying perfectly expresses the affability, kindness and hospitality of the citizens of Maiori towards those who visit their city.
One guest in particular, holds a spot in the hearts and minds of the people of Maiori, even though he died in 1977: the famous film director ROBERTO ROSSELLINI.

How did the great director of the neorealism period of cinema remember Maiori, the Amalfi Coast and the people here? "The places where we felt at home and that we love, where there are poor devils who are convinced that they have seen the devil himself ... they are crazy, intoxicated by the sun. But they know how to live, with a force that few of us possess: the power of the imagination!"

Rossellini formed his opinion of the inhabitants of Maiori during his trips to the city while researching his films. Many episodes of four of his films are set in Maiori. The great director filmed episodes for "Paisā" in 1946 when he discovered La Torre Normanna "the Norman Tower), The street urchin, Alfonsino, and the monks from the convent of S. Francesco; "Il Miracolo" (The Miracle) [the second episode of the film "L'Amore" (Love)] in 1948 when he discovered the soul of the people of Maiori whom he praised for their simplicity; "La macchina ammazzacattivi" (The machine for killing bad people), which he filmed in 1952, immortalizing all of the people of Maiori, rich and poor, wealthy and derelict, in his elegy to Folly, and "Il viaggio in Italia" (Travels in Italy), 1953, in which he exhalted the religious faith of Maiori.

Those who participated in these films, still today, fondly remember the great director who chose Maiori as the backdrop for many of his films. It is also thanks to Rossellini and his films, that many tourists, lovers of real "natural beauty" make Maiori and the Amalfi Coast their destination.

Our thanks to Enzo Mammato for his research on the films which Rossellini set in Maiori.
